Paige’s Sketchbook
Mrs. Vogel, always tuned into the children’s artworld, invited Medway students to contribute to the national project “The Sketchbook Library” sponsored by the Art House. Selected sketchbooks were chosen to travel across the U.S. with stops in LA, Brooklyn, Chicago, Atlanta and St. Louis. These sketchbooks are an attempt to open a new line of communication between the artist and the viewer.
Paige, a Middle School fifth grade student, created a sketchbook for the library. Here are her words about the project. Next, scroll down and see many of the pages from her book, as well as her personal descriptions.
“When I first got my theme “Super Heroes in Everyday Clothes”, I thought of people in disguise, like Superman as Clark Kent. Then, after I thought a long time, heroes like moms and dads came to mind. They are as ordinary as can be! In other words, in everyday clothes. For the first picture, I had all the scissors in the house sprawled on my desk. Without thinking I cut holes in the page and made them into glasses and underneath wrote “Look in these glasses and see the many super heroes of the world!” And that was that!”
Picture 1:

“Picture 2 is just the word SUPERHERO. I was in a rush and it is not my best.”:

“Picture 3 is my favorite. It is about the wonderful and brave search dogs. In the scene, a bridge fell down and people were in the water. The search dogs are rescuing them. In my opinion, they are real superheroes!”:

“Picture 4 is of guard do gs capturing thieves trying to get into a castle. The figures are shadows and they are not perfect.”:

“Picture 5/6 is of a service dog who is working with a blind person. The dog is a real helpful guide.”:

“Picture 7/8 is someone escaping from jail. The jail in the background is all ‘up in arms’. The jailors are trying to catch the escaped woman.”:

“Picture 9 is of a fireman rescuing a cat from building in flames. Another fireman is putting out the fire.”:

“Picture 10 is of an ambulance crew doing a rescue of a guy who hurt his leg - he cut it on a rock.”:

“Picture 11 is a sneaky detective snooping in the dark on a cold night. The detective is hoping to find a thief who stole a ring that belonged to the Duchess of France.”:

“Picture 12 I can’t remember what I did with this page.”:

“Picture 13 is a collage of army, air force, and marine stamps. They are heroes because they sacrifice their lives for other people.”:

“Picture 14 is a freaky plumber doing a gross job. He is a hero because he is putting his best effort into it. He volunteered for this job even though it was gross.”:

“Picture 15 is an odd and totally different coach just doing his job! Coaches work hard if they have a misbehaving team.”:

“Picture 16 is a bug-eyed exterminator exterminating bugs! He is saving homes from termites!”:

“Picture 17 is a scary spider lurking above his web. Spiders eat insects that carry disease that can hurt us.”:

Picture 18 is a shark eating fish! Sharks are heroes of the ocean because they eat dying, sick and old fish and seals. They make the ocean clean!

Great JOB by Paige!!!
